Knee Rehabilitation “Forget the VMO, Consider the HIP”
CEU Hours: 16

Course Summary:

This course will review the current treatment strategies utilized by therapists for treatment of patients with lower extremity pathology with an emphasis on conditions affecting the knee and utilization of the hip as a primary treatment approach. The course will provide an evidence-based approach to the evaluation and treatment of lower extremity dysfunction with exercise as the primary form of treatment. More and more studies published in journals such as JOSPT and Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise, are demonstrating that early, pain-free motion leads to faster improvement and better long-term results in patients with a multitude of different diagnoses involving the lower extremity.  Patients are referred to therapists for conservative management and to prevent the need for surgery on an ever-increasing scale. Tools are needed to manage these patients effectively and meet the goals of the patient. This course will help provide tools through evidence-based practice that can be utilized Monday morning in your clinic. A specific emphasis on use of the hip and core to diagnose and treat lower extremity pathology will be outlined, and supported by the most recent evidence.  This approach will be utilized for pre and post-operative management of knee pathology as well as being directed towards dysfunctions of the hip, ankle and foot, including sprains/strains, fallen arches, shin splints, and plantar fasciitis.  Knee issues discussed will include post-op rehabilitation for a variety of common surgeries, and management of common knee pathologies non-operatively including patella-femoral pain syndrome, hamstring, MCL, LCL, and ACL injuries, pes anserine, and pre-patellar bursitis.  Finally, the course will address evidence-based approaches to decreasing the risk of all of the above pathologies in the high school to professional athlete.
